Last week I was to visit with colleagues in the Bundestag on a tour of the Ukraine to surviving the Holocaust in Eastern Europe and to make me a picture of your situation. The dialogue with the survivors and those who help you stand in the foreground.
The people I met on my journey to earn our attention. They have survived the war and the destruction of their people and then survived on the other side of the "iron curtain" on under difficult conditions.
You just have to often suffer further retaliation. Without relatives, without social networks and without the help hide behind the thousands of survivors of the Holocaust shocking and moving individual stories.
The personal experience of waiting forget the memory, prevents and makes the responsibility we bear to life.
It is difficult to find peace after such an experience - and back again to the business in. The experience life has penetrated and not left it. It is not the first time I've talked to the survivors and of course it is not the first time I was confronted with old age, poverty and disease. It is rather so that I sometimes seemed the suffering for far too familiar. Nevertheless, it is different this time, but is the will - the conviction - to help do.
A sustained, remains a defining impression.
